Lodge prend la succession de Nolting (voir sa notice) et arrive au Vietnam au moment de la très forte tension entre Diem et les Bouddhistes. Le nouvel ambassadeur prendra fait et cause contre la féroce répression dont ils sont victimes et sera largement impliqué (affaire du « câble 243 », voir chronologie, 24 août 1963) dans le coup d’État des généraux putschistes qui aboutira à la mort de Diem et Nhu en novembre 1963. Lodge démissionnera en juin 1964 pour se présenter aux primaires des présidentielles républicaines.
